Leadership Development Team

Each year, athletes from all programs come together, and under the guidance and mentorship of Track and Field/Cross Country Director Shane Wiebe, are led through theory and discussion on the subjects of leadership and faith in sport. The team volunteers in partnership with Special Olympics to put on an annual motionball event, bringing Special Olympians onto TWU’s campus to promote the Special Olympics movement. Local & Global Outreach

Spartan coaches and athletes continue to be leaders in the local and global community. Locally, students partner with organizations such as CLA Church, Special Olympics, Langley Food Bank and Elim Retirement Village, as well as with local youth sports clubs and academies and in the Langley School District to teach, coach, and serve the community. Globally, teams have come alongside organizations like TeamUp for missional projects in countries such as Paraguay, South Africa, Benin, Russia, Brazil, Swaziland, and Malawi.

New in 2021, the Spartans Mentorship Program focuses on the development of athletes outside the arena of sport. Spartan athletes pair with high school athletes to provide insights on life and sport, and to foster relationships. Athletes connect and share with high school athletes on all areas of the Complete Champion Approach™, including high performance athletics, mental health and performance, nutrition, leadership, balancing life as a student and an athlete.

Bahta Melles Award

Presented to varsity athletes who are involved in community service on and off the campus,
and best exemplify servant-leadership both in and out of the competitive arena.

Aaron Paetkau | Men’s Basketball

Paetkau embodied what being a servant-leader is all about. On the court, he was the epitome of what it means to be a hard-working role player both in practice and in games, pushing himself and his teammates to be better every day. Off the court, he was a caring teammate who is helping to lead a Christ-centred culture within the basketball program.

Jessica Bailey | Women’s Volleyball

The graduated Bailey was an inspiring athlete within the women's volleyball program, the Spartans athletic department and the TWU community. Amongst her various volunteer-based efforts, Bailey was a vocal ambassador for mental health, as she willingly shared her own story in an effort to foster a community that encourages open and honest conversations.

Legacy Award

This award is a scholarship that is presented to one female and one male athlete each year who is a returning 3rd or 4th-year student and who has demonstrated significant leadership on his or her team. These student-athletes have led in such a way that he or she is leaving a legacy for his or her program and the Department that will live on for future leaders to build upon.

Jarrett Fontaine | Men’s Hockey

Fontaine was the ultimate role model within the Spartans men's hockey program. He was the team's faith leader and academic leader and he was heavily involved in volunteer opportunities throughout the Langley community. He is the Spartans captain and will help lead the men's hockey team's transition into the Canada West conference starting in 2021-21.

Kristen Sakaki | Women’s Soccer

In addition to being an all-Star defender, Sakaki consistently volunteered for team events, outreaches and community service opportunities. She volunteered with the Spartans girls soccer academy in Burnaby, helped coach with Surrey United and was a leader on team service trips abroad.
